HISTORY
Built in 1807, Sumner Mansion is on the National Historic Register.  It was designed by reknown architect Asher Benjamin and is often referred to as "one of the best examples of Federal architecture in Vermont."  Originally the home of David Sumner, a wealthy entrepreneur who made his fortune in logging, the house fortunately retains many of its original features.  Two large rooms were added in 1970, but they too were built from Asher Benjamin designs.  One of these is a 2-story library with a circular staircase housing upwards of 2000 volumes.
The grounds are as beautiful as the house.  A favorite place for weddings is under the huge silver maple, one of the largest in New England.  The formal patio gardens could be part of any celebration, and the Alpaca sheep greeting you as you drive onto the grounds will surely make you smile.
