The Sumner Mansion is one of the few preserved examples of the early work of Asher Benjamin, who after leaving Vermont for Boston, became famous for his influence in the

Greek Revival in Colonial architectural designs. His later work still can be seen on Beacon Hill and other historic areas of Boston.

David Sumner, a prominent lumber businessman, owned and occupied this home during his most prosperous years (1811-1867). The Sumner Mansion, said to be one of the best examples of Federal Architecture in Vermont, has been owned by only four families since 1807. It is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Stay in Elegance and Style
Sumner Mansion recreates a Colonial atmosphere in it's large bedchambers with 10-foot ceilings, private baths, working fireplaces, canopy beds and period furnishings. All rooms are air conditioned. A bountiful breakfast buffet and afternoon refreshments with complimentary wine are served in the grand dining room. All guests receive a personalized itinerary for daily excursions in the area.
Mansion Rental and special events

Rental of the house and grounds provide an ideal setting for extended family gatherings or special events such as wedding receptions, business meetings, conferences and retreats. The grand dining room, library and music room with over 1600 sq. ft. of space can accommodate about 90 guests for dining and dancing. The expansive lawns adjacent to these rooms are ideal for tents of any size, which can expand our facilities to handle larger affairs up to 200. Other public rooms include a living room and a Keeping room which provide additional space for smaller conversational groups or "break out" sessions.

Testimonials

"The reception was a delight. Thank you for all you did to make it go so smoothly and with such pleasure for us all. As stage manager you are absolutely tops! Every detail was anticipated and prepared for. I can think of no way anything could have been done better. Naturally I am reaping all sorts of compliments and thanks from dazzled friends and relatives, but I know who deserves the credit- The Thorburns, innkeepers par excellence!"

Sincerely (and gratefully)
